Until 1968. the Grand Prix de Roma marked the zenith and the ultimate objective of composition studies at the Paris Conservatory. This unique recording features music a young Ravel wrote for the event 1900 - 1905. Detailed program notes by Gerard Condé give information about this major competition and Ravel's participation. Music he wrote for it, listed above here is performed by a first-class group of soloists. The recording was made in Fance 2020-2021, and the audio is up to BIS's usual high standard. This is a luxurious production and comes with a 72-page booklet with detailed program information and complete texts and translatons. This is a unique addition to the Ravel discography.

John Wilson's series of recordings with the virtuoso Sinfonia of London by continues with this feast of string sonorities. This site has praised many previous releases, particularly a Korngold SACD (REVIEW), and Respighi's Roman Trilogy (REVIEW). This latest recording features music for strings. Strauss's Metamorphosen, originally composed for seven solo strings, is one of his most somber works. It has been recorded many times by leading conductors; this new one is among the best particularly because of its crystal clear sound. We also have the works of Schreker and Korngold for strings. but this new version has the advantage of the recordings were made August 2-21 in the warm acoustics of London's Church of St. Augustine. A rewarding issue!

Tacet here offers a delightful disk of music for cello played by Miklos Perényi. In the works by Mendelssohn, Debussy, Martinu and Kodaly. He is assisted by pianist Denes Varjon. The ensemble Concerto Budapest directed by Anaras Keller is featured in the Schumann concerto.
