This site has praised a number of single issues of Bruckner symphonies with .Marek Jurowski and the Suisse Romande Orchestra (Symphonies 1, 3. 4, 7, 8/Mass) (see INDEX). I was pleasantly surprised at the strength of these performances, the bold playing of the Swiss orchestra under Janowski's dynamic direction, and now Pentatone has issued this 10-disk set of all of the symphonies plus the Mass in a single boxed set. It is a handsome issue indeed and well worth investigation by all collectors. If you do not already own any of these, this is particularly attractive, 10 disks roughly for the price of four. A handsome booklet also is provided which includes text for eh Mass.

About this site has praised the first two issues in the Chandos series of orchestral works of Kurt Atterberg: Symphonies 4 and 6 (REVIEW), and Symphonies 2 and 8 (REVIEW). Now we have e the third volume in the series which gives us the opportunity to hear two more intriguing symphonies by one of Sweden's major composers. Symphony No. 1, a lengthy work (36:46) was written 1909 and revised four years later, the version here recorded. It seems to be somewhat experimental, but still displays Atterberg's rich orchestration—I particularly enjoyed his frequent use of the tam-tam, particularly in the third movement presto of Symphony No. 5. Atterberg conducted the premiere with the Berlin Philharmonic January 12, 1923m and it later was conducted by Furtwängler. There are three movements, with a center funeral march. It is of considerably more interest than the first symphony; both are giving superb performances by the fine orchestra under J¨¥Järvi's solid direction. Audio is excellent, if not particularly"surround."

Armenian conductor Ruiben Gazarian (b. 1971) leads the Georgia Chamber Orchestra in music of Juon, Müller, Bloch and Honegger, a recording made in January of this ye ar.. This ensemble was founded in 1990, and plays expertly in this generally somber program. . Perhaps the most interesting work is Müoller's three-movement concerto for the unlikely combination of cello, two horns and strings. Composed in 2007 and inspired by various works of Paul Klee. There are three movements each a " Polyphonia, with the titles Auttrieb und Weg, Versunkraut Landscchatt, Wie kraut und Rüben). It is not an ingratiating work either for listeners or performers. Audio is excellent, rather close-up which exposes some rather stringent string sound. The trumpet in the Honegger is surprisingly subdued. Not a major addition to the SACD catalog.
